What it’s Really Like to be a Beautycounter Brand Advocate
A friend recently asked me what it’s really like to be a Beautycounter brand advocate because it’s not something I talk about much. It made me realize I should talk about more because I love this job!! It’s true that to be successful you need to work consistently, but if you enjoy a female-forward community, creativity, and clean beauty, it’s a fantastic (and fun!) way to create an additional stream of income.
If you think you might be interested in joining (it’s not for everyone!), email me at paigeonthepeak@gmail.com and I’d be happy to chat with you more. I won’t spam you – if we talk and you decide it’s not your thing, no hard feelings.
What is the cost to sign up?
It’s $50 a year which includes your personal website, 24/7 support from Beautycounter staff, and TONS of online training and resources.
Are there selling minimums?
You have to sell $350 in qualifying volume in a six month period. This is TOTALLY doable if you work your business. That’s basically 2-3 sales. If you’re coachable and willing to work, you’ll surprise yourself with how successful you can be.
What happens if I don’t hit the selling minimum?
Nothing bad happens at all!! You would just be converted to a Band of Beauty member, which is the customer membership program that gets you great perks.
How much do Beautycounter consultants make?
That’s really up to you! It depends on how consistently you work your business. Consultants make 25-35% commission on all sales. For example, if you sell $500 of product in a month, your check would be around $125. For reference, the average order is $120.
Do I get a discount or free products?
Yes! Brand advocates get 25% off all products, every day.
I don’t really know about the products. How will I be able to answer questions about people’s skin?
Don’t sweat!! I knew nothing about the beauty industry and didn’t even have a skincare routine until I started using Beautycounter (the ease of having a routine laid out for me was part of why I joined!). You’ll absolutely learn as you go and become more comfortable over time.
You can also sign up with a mentor, which I HIGHLY recommend. Anytime I have a question, I send a Voxer message to my mentor, Teri, or to the broader team Facebook or Voxer group. If you sign up with me, I’d be your mentor and will be there for you 24/7. Mentoring is hands down my favorite part of this work, because I love helping people achieve their goals!
There’s never an expectation that you’d know everything. There is SO much expertise among fellow brand advocates who are eager to help because #womenhelpingwomen. We’re all working for a worthy cause!
Do I have to be a blogger to be successful?
Absolutely not. There are many, many ways to create a successful business (whatever “successful” means to you!) outside of blogging or even social media. I know a couple brand advocates who work entirely by word of mouth. Whatever you’re comfortable with is the best way 🙂
But… selling products feels gross and unnatural. I don’t want to be one of those “hey girl” people.
Ooooh, do I get that deep in my soul. I get that because at first, I totally approached this opportunity thinking that “hey girl” was the only way. It backfired big time (shocker!). Now, my approach feels not only natural, but also extremely authentic to who I am and my values. The truth is that we’re all selling, all the time. Everything from “y’all have to try this restaurant” to “this is my new favorite eye cream” is selling. The question is – do you want to get paid for it?
But… it’s an MLM.
True. Beautycounter is a multi-level marketing, direct-to-consumer business model. I get rewarded for mentoring folks and adding to my team. However, I get 5-9% commission on the sales of my team members while getting 25-35% commission on my own sales – so I’m WAY more motivated to make my own sales than just ride on the coattails of my team. Plus, I pour a lot into my team with one-on-one mentoring and sharing tips/resources I’ve created. Just like a boss getting a bonus in corporate America when their staff performs super well, it makes sense to be rewarded when your team succeeds. Mentoring is my absolute favorite part of this work, because I love nothing more than seeing the joy and pride of a teammate finding success in their own business.
How is Beautycounter different from other MLMs?
Beautycounter is different in several ways:
1. You can buy products directly online through the website. You don’t have to buy through a consultant.
2. You can purchase products in several stores as well as in most Ulta stores across the country (and online through Ulta, too).
3. As a consultant, you’re not required to purchase any products or maintain a backstock of product.
4. Beautycounter is a B-corp, which means they balance profits with people. They are extremely transparent and ethical.
Do I make less since you get a cut?
Nope! You’ll always make 25-35% on your own sales.
Do people have to buy through a consultant?
Again, nope! There are other ways to shop, both online and in-store through Ulta.
So… you actually like it?
I love being a brand advocate. I’ve been a consultant for almost 4 years and still love it. The past two years have been the most fun for me since I’ve become a lot more comfortable and confident, and I have a lot of great tips to share with my team about showing up as your authentic self.
Is there anything you don’t you like about it?
I wish consultants would get free shipping… but I also recognize that shipping comes with a heavy environmental cost, which Beautycounter is trying to offset (they’ll be carbon neutral by 2025!).
Ok, I want to learn more.
Great! Email me at paigeonthepeak@gmail.com and we can chat about if it’s a good fit for you!
Nah, not interested.
That’s fine, too!
